The National Hurricane Center reported the depression had maximum sustained winds near 35 mph. Forecasters at the NHC expect to see it strengthen to a tropical storm, likely to be named Nicole, later in the day.

A storm surge is expected to rise between one and two feet, and some parts of South Florida could see anywhere between four to eight inches of rain. The worst of the weather should move into South Florida early Wednesday, beginning with the Upper Keys.
